My name is Jaime Roster and with my husband Nick, we own Cherry Stop. We opened as a retail store in 1997 became the owners of the business in June 2005. We were interested in owning our own business, and as luck would have it, this prominent business in Nick’s hometown was on the market. In the past two-plus years, we have had a lot of fun searching for new product lines, seeking out local artisans, and creating new recipes. We have also given the store a makeover, creating a cozy, hometown Traverse City atmosphere in the store. This past summer, we opened an old-fashioned soda fountain in the store, and offer our very own Cherry Vanilla Cream Soda alongside the tastiest cherry pie in the region (Nick’s recipe)!
Cherry Stop is a family-owned business located in Traverse City, Michigan, the Cherry Capital of the World! The Grand Traverse region of northern Michigan produces about 75% of the nation’s tart (sour) cherries, and is also a major producer of sweet cherries. The Cherry Stop celebrates the cherry heritage of the region by featuring a wide selection of gourmet cherry foods as well as unique cherry-inspired gifts. We offer everything from dried cherries to cherry salsa, cherry luggage to cherry baby bibs, even cherry pet treats. Our cherry food products are produced locally, using locally grown cherries. Local artisans handcraft many of our gift items as well. We strive to promote the Grand Traverse region and the entire cherry industry in our store.
In addition to our brick-and-mortar store in Traverse City, our products are available in a selection of stores throughout Michigan. We have been successfully operating an online store, maintain a print catalog annually and joined GourmetFoodMall.com in 2007.
Customers shopping online or b
y phone will experience our high level of service and personal attention, as if they were right here in the store. To keep in touch with customers, we send a monthly newsletter highlighting new and featured products, recipes, and new and favorite uses for cherries. News and happenings in the area are also included, to help our customers feel connected to Traverse City. We even announced the birth of our son in last March’s newsletter!
In everything we do, our goal is to provide premium cherry products in a customer-oriented environment. We strive for the highest level of customer service and enjoy providing individual attention to each customer. In doing so, we promote the cherry industry of the area from grower to processor to customer, thereby supporting the community as a whole.
If you are ever in town, please come by and visit with us. Don’t forget to try a slice of Nick’s Cherry Pie. If you can’t get to Traverse City, why don’t you try the following recipe.
Cherry Glazed Chicken
1 broiler-fryer chicken (2.5-3 lbs), cut up or 6 chicken breast halves
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp dried thyme
salt and pepper to taste
1-2 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 can (16 oz) unsweetened tart cherries or 2 cups frozen cherries (with 1/2 cup cherry juice or water)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp yellow mustard
Directions
Rinse chicken; pat dry with paper towel. Pour milk into a shallow container. Combine flour, thyme, salt & pepper. Dip chicken first in milk, then in flour mixture; coat evenly. Heat oil in large skillet. Add chicken; brown on all sides. Put chicken in 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Bake covered with aluminum foil in a preheated 350-degree oven for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, drain cherries preserving 1/2 cup juice. Combine cherry juice, brown sugar & granulated sugar in a small saucepan; mix well. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat. Add mustard; mix well. Cook 5 minutes, or until sauce is slightly thickened. Stir in cherries. (sauce will thicken more as it is baked on chicken.) After chicken has cooked 30 minutes, remove from oven and uncover. Spoon hot cherry mixture over chicken. bake, uncovered 15 - 20 minutes, or until chicken is tender. Serve immediately.
